The Indian equity markets saw a sudden sharp fall in mid-morning trade. The markets closed on a negative note, closing more than 1.5% lower in Tuesday’s trade. The Sensex plummeted almost 1,400 points or 1.80% at 76,024, while the Nifty 50 cracked 1.5% to cease the day below the 23,200 level. The sudden steep fall in the market was more of a nervous anticipation by investors ahead of the key Trump Tariff coming into effect on April 02.
Key Factors That Investors Watched Out For
US Tariffs
US President Donald Trump announced that the US will be imposing a uniform global tariff on all countries on Wednesday, April 02. Trump has termed it as “Liberation Day.”
"We would start with all countries, so let’s see what happens," said Trump.
Global Markets
The global equity markets majorly advanced on Monday and Tuesday morning. Investors awaited clarity on Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. The equity markets in the US closed mostly on a higher note. Following this, Asia-Pacific markets opened Tuesday’s trade on a positive note.
RBI Monetary Policy Announcement
The RBI Monetary Policy Committee is set to meet between April 7-9. The overall consensus is for another 25 bps rate cut. The RBI is also expected to maintain easy liquidity access in the market. The RBI’s estimates for FY26 GDP and inflation would be crucial.
